Read a screenshot on your PC or Mac
A QR code in a message, document or browser window does not require a second device. Save the image or take a screenshot, then choose it in the reader above. You can inspect the decoded link before deciding whether to visit it.
- Capture the whole QR code with a little blank space on all four sides. On Windows, use the Snipping Tool or Windows + Shift + S. On a Mac, use Shift + Command + 4.
- Choose the saved PNG or JPG. If an image is on your clipboard, paste it with Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on Mac while this page is open.
- Read the result and its format. Copy the text, or follow a link only after you have checked its destination.
Keep the original detail
Start with the original screenshot rather than a photograph of your monitor. A small chat preview can lose the squares that make up the code. If available, open or download the full-size picture. Increasing the size of an already blurry image does not recover missing detail.
Do not crop away the blank border. If several codes appear in one screenshot, make a separate crop for each and preserve its margin. You can select all those crops together for a batch scan; the reader checks for one code per image.
When a screenshot will not scan
Check for an obstructed corner, a logo over the pattern, or low contrast between the squares and background. Try a sharper capture at the page’s normal size. If your clipboard contains a copied web address instead of an image, save the actual picture and choose the file.
Your image stays in this browser
The reader processes images locally and does not upload them. Results remain in this page until cleared or closed. A successfully decoded QR code can still point to an unfamiliar website, so review its text before opening it. You can create a QR code locally too, or read the privacy explanation.
